All You Need To Know About Pcb Assembly
Printed Circuit Board Assembly is
the process of including the required components to a printed circuit board in
order to form a full-fledged printed circuit board assembly. The construction of
printed circuit board assembly involves two methods, viz. Surface Mount
Technique (SMT) and Through-hole Technique (THT). SMT consumes less space, while
THT provides strength to the component. So, both these construction techniques
have their own advantages and disadvantages in the assembling
process.
About the Assembly
PCBs basically use different
conductive pathways, tracks and traces to connect different electronic
components mechanically. All these components are carefully etched from
laminated copper sheets and put onto the non-conductive substrate. The component
leads are then carefully inserted through the holes in the circuit board in case
of THT and placed on the external pads of the board in case of SMT. At last all
the component leads are attached to the PCB by soft metal soldering. If products
are manufactured in high volume, then bulk wave soldering is generally used.
Machine placement and Reflow ovens are also used in the assembly process. Nearly
every assembly unit is created using these techniques and
equipment.
Significance of the assembly unit
Today, PCB
assembly services are vitally important in the manufacturing of all electronic
devices. There is a wide range of utilities of the assembly unit in this
electronic and technological world. Electronic devices like computers,
calculators, i-Pods, consoles, televisions etc. use assembly unit as an
important integral part.
The assembly units have got a significant
role to play in improving the performance of existing devices or gadgets. It
either replaces the entire board with another assembly unit or works on
individual parts of the unit.
There are many electronic manufacturing
firms around the world providing printed circuit board designing and
manufacturing services. The electronic manufacturers generally give the assembly
manufacturing work to those firms on a contract basis since they cannot invest
their workforce in assembly manufacturing Rigid flex PCB. However, some large
electronic manufacturers usually hire professional assemblers from reputable and
authorized assembly services to manufacture large scale electronic
devices.
When different electronic components are attached to a
circuit board PCB Prototype, it is
called as printed circuit board (PCB). There are different technologies like
surface-mount technology, through-hole technology and box-build,
electro-mechanical assembly which are responsible to attach electronic
components to form PCB assembly.
How Assembly is done
The
surface-mount technology and through-hole assembly are mostly used in circuit
board manufacturing. Both these methods have their own advantages and
disadvantages. The former method consumes less space and less expensive, whereas
the latter method takes more space than surface mounting and provides more
strength to the board. Through-hole process is more expensive compared to
surface mounting.
